Stefanie Shamila Pillai

Vita

Dr. Pillai is a Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. She was deputy dean and then dean of the faculty from 2014 to 2018. She previously headed the university’s centre for industry and community linkage. She is a member of the main committee of the national programme for Higher Institution Centres of Excellence. She recently headed a working group looking into improving talent attraction for the university. Her main areas of research are acoustic phonetics, as well as, language documentation and language revitalisation of endangered languages. She has been working with a local creole community to ensure that their language does not die off. She recently completed a Newton-funded project on capacity building for language documentation. She has a B.Ed. TESL degree from Christ Church University Canterbury/ University of Kent, and a Master of ESL and PhD in Linguistics from Universiti Malaya.
